Our Origins
2nd New Haw was first registered in 1974 and can be recognised by our scarlet scarf. We were founded by Scouters and Parents who were kean to offer Scouting to as many young men in New Haw as possible. Since then both 1st and 2nd New Haw Scout Groups have offered Scouting to the local community.
The 1970’s
The Group grew rapidly in the 1970’s and by the time the HQ construction was complete in 1979 the Group had a Scout Troop and a Cub Pack (Panthers). By the end of the decade the Group had started second Cub Pack (Badgers) and a Venture Scout Unit.
The 1980’s
The Group continued to prosper during the 1980s. In 1982 the Group ran one of the first Beaver Colonies in the UK for younger boys between 6 and 8 years old. Initially called Beavers they were not members of the Group and all wore turquoise scarves. In 1986 Beaver Scouts were recognised as an official section and got to wear Group’s scarlet scarf.
The 80’s also saw the end of two pieces of uniform – the Scout Beret and the Cub Scout Cap.
The 1990’s
In 1990 we welcomed girls into all our sections and the Group continued to grow – its Venture Scout unit went from strength to strength with a number of Queens Scout Awards awarded. In 1991 we had a Venture Scout attend the 17th World Scout Jamboree in Korea.
The Group celebrated its Silver Anniversary in 1999 and held its first annual Family Fun Day. To mark our 25th year we held a competition to design the Group badge which we wear on our scarves to this day. Two Scouts from the Group attended the 19th World Scout Jamboree in Chile.
The New Millennium
The Troop held its first overseas camp in Switzerland at Kandersteg International Scout Centre in 2000 – we liked it so much we’ve been revisiting ever since. In 2003 we had a Leader attend the 20th World Scout Jamboree in Thailand.
In 2002 our Venture Scout Unit became Phoenix Explorer Scouts. At the same time uniform was changed for all members.
In 2007, the Group together with the rest of the world celebrated Scouting’s Centenary. Some of members visited the UK Jamboree and the Group headed to the O2 Dome for Live 07 where one of our Scouts carried the District flag.
The Next Decade
2011 was a busy year – the Explorer Scouts headed to Italy for a week of skiing in the alps and in the summer of that year two of them attended the 22nd World Scout Jamboree in Sweden. We welcomed new leaders into the Group including some of our Explorer Scouts when they reached 18.
We have continued to improve our HQ with the addition in 2018 of an activity space and bouldering wall.
We have had Leaders and Explorer Scouts attend the 2015 Jamboree in Japan and the 2019 Jamboree in North America. The Explorers have also visited Iceland for their summer expedition.
2020s
2020 started with a fantastic trip for the Explorers to Kandersteg for a week of winter sports. A few weeks later face to face Scouting stopped as the Covid-19 pandemic arrived and our activities moved online. Regular meetings restarted 6 months later.
Today we have over 120 members enjoying Scouting at 2nd New Haw.
